Note

Milan Hapala, class of 1940, came to the college as an exchange student in 1938 from Brno, Czechoslovakia. When that country was overrun by Nazi Germany, Hapala's father wrote to Beloit's president, Irving Maurer: "As is known to you, the Czech nation has lost her most precious estate, her independence. We believe, however, firmly in the truth expressed by our great philosopher and statesman, President T. G. Masaryk, when he declared that no system of administration can be sustained by violence." He went on to ask whether the college could keep Milan for another year. Maurer arranged for the college to pay expenses, and Hapala graduated in 1940, eventually becoming a U.S. citizen and college professor.
